Gauhati University's postgraduate students, the research community, faculty members, and families organized a peace protest demanding justice for a female doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The demonstrators called for stringent punishment for the culprits through a fast-track court.
Around 1,000 students and teachers participated in a candlelight vigil at the university's main entrance. The protesters urged the government to enforce strict measures to prevent such incidents and called for non-political action on the issue.
In a symbolic gesture, the gathering sang peaceful songs at the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cemetery, emphasizing their call to end rape in the country. A protestor criticized the Rs 10 lakh compensation offered by CM Mamata Banerjee, arguing that it fails to deliver justice or comfort to the victim's family.
Earlier, junior doctors and medical students at AIIMS Mangalagiri also held a protest demanding justice. A protesting student expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in the case, saying it reflects a failure of humanity and society.
A faculty member echoed the sentiment, questioning the safety of workplaces even after 78 years of independence. Protestors vowed to continue their fight until justice is served.
