Brazil Secures Consensus Documents for G20 Finance Meetings

Brazil has reached an agreement to approve consensus documents at the upcoming G20 finance meetings in Rio de Janeiro. This move comes after a previous failure to issue a joint statement due to geopolitical disagreements. Brazil will address geopolitical issues separately to focus on global priorities like inequality, poverty, and climate change.

Brazil has successfully reached an agreement for consensus documents to be approved during the upcoming G20 finance meetings in Rio de Janeiro, according to Mauricio Lyrio, Brazil's ambassador at the G20.

In February, finance leaders from the world's largest economies were unable to issue a joint statement because of disagreements over geopolitical issues. Despite the challenges, Brazil concentrated on creating a concise text that aligns with its priorities: addressing inequality, poverty, and climate change. 'We will no longer require the inclusion of geopolitical language in ministerial documents,' Lyrio noted, stressing that the unanimous endorsement was received from all G20 members.

Mauricio Lyrio highlighted that each consensus statement produced by the G20 countries would be supplemented by a separate document from the Brazilian G20 presidency, focusing on geopolitical issues. Earlier this month, Lyrio mentioned that G20 diplomats had concurred to sidestep contentious geopolitical topics during their ministerial meetings, preparing for a summit in November.

It is worth noting that the previous G20 summit in New Delhi concluded with a leaders' declaration which avoided a direct condemnation of Russia for its conflict in Ukraine. Instead, it underscored the suffering caused by the war and urged all states to refrain from using force to seize territory.
