The Maharashtra government has announced a new initiative aimed at facilitating free pilgrimages for senior citizens above the age of 60 under the Mukhyamantri Teerth Darshan Yojana.

A Government Resolution (GR) detailing the scheme was released on Sunday following its approval by the state Cabinet. The scheme was initially announced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the legislative assembly.

Senior citizens selected through a lottery system will get the chance to visit prominent religious sites across the country. The list of destinations includes Vaishno Devi temple, Amarnath Caves, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Char Dham Yatra, Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and more.

Within Maharashtra, the scheme covers 15 religious spots in Mumbai such as Siddhivinayak temple and the Mount Mary church in Bandra.

Eligible beneficiaries with an annual income of up to Rs 2.5 lakh will receive Rs 30,000 to cover travel, accommodation, and food expenses. Applicants over the age of 75 can bring along a spouse or attendant.

A 17-member state-level committee, chaired by the social justice minister, and a seven-member district-level panel will oversee the scheme. The commissioner of the social welfare department will serve as the nodal officer.

Authorized tourist companies and IRCTC will manage bus and railway journeys. Selection at the district level will be population-based. The initiative aims to help economically constrained senior citizens fulfill their spiritual aspirations.
