The Odisha government has given the green light for an outreach centre of the National School of Drama (NSD) to be set up in Bhubaneswar, according to state minister Suryabanshi Suraj. Initially, the centre will function temporarily at the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre.
Suraj highlighted that the NSD centre in Bhubaneswar is a significant achievement for Odisha, providing aspiring theatre students a prime opportunity to advance their careers. The centre is expected to play a crucial role in developing Odia theatre, bringing regional stories and traditional drama to broader national and global audiences.
Consultations between Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Culture Minister Suraj led to the decision to establish the outreach centre. Suraj emphasized the role of drama in carrying forth Odisha's rich history, literature, and culture, noting that the NSD centre could serve as a catalyst for the growth of Odia theatre productions. Since its establishment in 1959 in Delhi, NSD has promoted cultural arts, and its new presence in Odisha is set to further these goals.
