Kolkata's Alipore Zoo has been honored with a blue plaque, underscoring its heritage significance as it celebrates 150 years since its inception. The landmark initiative was spearheaded by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Director Subhankar Sengupta confirmed.
The zoo, inaugurated on September 24, 1875, stretches over 19 hectares and is home to approximately 1,265 animals. With the installation on Monday, Alipore Zoo joins an esteemed list of heritage buildings in the city, recognized for their historical and architectural value.
KMC has previously installed these plaques at other Grade I Heritage buildings like the Indian Museum and Government College of Art and Craft, signifying places of national importance. The initiative spans over 350 sites across the city, reflecting Kolkata's rich cultural legacy.
