The ruling Congress in Karnataka is planning to invite former US President Barack Obama to an event in Belagavi this December, celebrating the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's leadership of the Indian National Congress.
The 1924 Belagavi Congress session, the only one presided over by Gandhi, holds substantial historical importance. The state's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress President DK Shivakumar have formed a committee aiming to have Obama address the mega event scheduled for December 24-26.
Addressing an event on Gandhi Jayanti, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil emphasized Obama's recognition of Gandhi as a global leader, hoping the event will raise awareness and respect for Gandhi's legacy. Siddaramaiah affirmed the government's commitment to making the centenary celebrations memorable during his Independence Day speech on August 15.
