An event commemorating Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary provided a platform for rape survivors to share their traumatic experiences, advocating for the immediate prohibition of sexually explicit content.
The 'Jan Sunwayi' or public hearing, organized by the Coalition of Organizations to Combat Production of Sexually Perverted Content, saw rape survivors recounting how pornographic material emboldened men to commit sexual violence.
Spearheaded by the Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation, alongside People Against Rape in India, Sampurna, and Sewa Nyaya Utthan, the event highlighted the negative impact of explicit content on society's moral fabric.
Uday Mahurkar, founder of the Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation, called on the government to impose a comprehensive ban on sexually explicit material and advocated for severe penalties for violators, including long jail terms, no bail, and fast-track trials.
Yogita Bhayana, founder of People Against Rape in India, and veteran activist Dr. Shobha Vijender of Sampurna echoed Mahurkar's concerns and emphasized the urgent need for action to protect women and children from the influence of pornography.
Studies were cited linking pornography consumption to increased sexual violence, underscoring the necessity for stricter controls.
