Hindu activists assembled outside a non-vegetarian hotel in Thanabhawan town, Shamli district, on Sunday, staging a protest to demand the closure of such hotels near temples.
The demonstration, spearheaded by Mahant Swami Yashvir Maharaj of Yog Sadhan Ashram Bhagra, was deferred for a week following assurances from district authorities to consider the legal aspects and take necessary steps.
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Hamid Husain confirmed that the authorities had sought reports from licensing bodies regarding the operation of non-vegetarian hotels in proximity to temples. Activists have been particularly vocal about shutting down establishments within a hundred meters of temple grounds.
