A boat being used for the immersion of the Andhericha Raja Ganesh idol capsized at Versova jetty in Mumbai on Sunday, leaving two persons injured, a civic official reported.

Dozens of people jumped into the sea in a bid to save themselves as the incident unfolded in the morning.

Nearby fishermen in their boats attempted to assist. The injured, identified as Siddhi Nayak (17) and Sachin Nayak (46), were taken to a hospital for treatment, the official added.

Ganesh Utsav celebrations in Maharashtra conclude on Anant Chaturdashi annually, but the Andhericha Raja idol is traditionally immersed after 21 days. The procession, beginning in the evening, usually reaches the seashore by the following morning, winding its way through Andheri village.
