Pope Francis received a hero's welcome as he arrived in East Timor on Monday to support its recovery from a violent struggle for independence and to celebrate its progress since breaking free from Indonesian rule two decades ago.
Thousands of Timorese thronged the motorcade route from the airport, waving Vatican and Timorese flags and using yellow and white umbrellas to shield themselves from the scorching sun. Shouts of “Viva el Papa!” filled the air as he passed by, blessing a baby presented to him. The 87-year-old Francis waved and smiled broadly at the cheering crowds.
East Timor, predominantly Catholic, is eagerly celebrating the Pope's visit, which follows the 25th anniversary of the UN-backed referendum that led to independence. Francis will confront the nation's troubled past and a recent scandal involving revered local church figures during his trip.
