Amidst a period of national mourning for the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for choosing to visit Vietnam. Poonawalla pointed to Gandhi's absence at home during this time as deeply disrespectful, criticizing him for prioritizing leisure over national duties.
Gandhi, who publicly revered Dr. Singh as a 'father figure,' received backlash for the timing of his trip, which was perceived as insensitive. Poonawalla remarked that Gandhi's actions aptly redefine his role from Leader of Opposition to 'Leader of Partying.' However, Congress leader Manickam Tagore called the criticism a diversion tactic employed by the BJP.
Tagore pointed out the ruling party's own missteps, such as denying Dr. Singh a cremation spot on the prestigious Yamuna banks. Meanwhile, Poonawalla also accused the Gandhi family of neglect, noting their absence at Singh's 'asthi visarjan' due to a lack of media presence. Dr. Singh passed away on December 26 at the age of 92 and was cremated with state honors.
