Mumbai's civic body has issued a public advisory urging residents to be cautious of stingray and jellyfish bites during Ganesh festival idol immersions. The festival, set to commence on Saturday, involves the immersion of hundreds of idols over a 10-day period.
Trial netting by the Maharashtra Fisheries Department has uncovered a high presence of harmful marine creatures off the coasts of Girgaon and Dadar. Species like Dhomi, Kolambi, Shingti, and Blue Jelly Fish were found alongside stingrays and jellyfish, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported.
Citizens are advised to use life guards and civic resources at beaches, wear protective clothing, and heed public announcements. Medical facilities are available on-site for any stingray or jellyfish bites, which can cause severe skin irritation or burns. The BMC's advice comes ahead of the main immersion day on September 17.
