Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh expressed optimism that India will commence production of carbon fibre, a crucial material in aerospace, civil engineering, and defense sectors, by 2025-26. Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Friday expressed confident that India will begin producing niche carbon fibre—used in aerospace, civil engineering, and defense—as an alternative to metal by 2025-26.
Currently, India depends entirely on imports from the US, France, Japan, and Germany for carbon fibre. The European Union's forthcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, a tax on embedded carbon imports, is slated to start in 2026.
Singh highlighted the government's initiatives like the National Technical Textiles Mission and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, asserting that these measures have balanced imports and fostered industry growth. He expressed confidence in achieving a $10 billion export target for technical textiles by 2030, prominently through sectors like Meditech and Agrotech.
