Tensions escalated at Ravenshaw University on Wednesday evening as a torch rally over a renaming proposal turned violent. Clashes broke out between students and alleged outsiders, disrupting the rally led by the 'Save Ravenshaw Legacy Forum'.
The rally, which began at Ranihat Square and concluded at College Square, saw students and alumni fervently opposing the renaming of the 156-year-old institution. Their chants demanded the retention of the university's historic name.
Authorities and police refrained from immediate comments but their swift intervention was crucial in restoring order. The protest emerged after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan suggested a name change on August 31, a proposal that has encountered substantial resistance from the university and local community.
