For the first time in recent years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a significant drop in its business enterprise value, falling from US$11.2 billion to US$9.9 billion, an 11.7% decrease. This decline is primarily due to a reassessment of media rights, as highlighted in a recent report by D & P Advisory.

The report cites several market dynamics including the failed Zee-Sony merger and the consolidation of Reliance-owned Network18 and Disney-owned Star India, which have created monopolistic control over TV and digital broadcasting. Additionally, delays in the entry of major tech players like Amazon, Meta, and Apple into the IPL media rights arena have further impacted the valuation.

In contrast, the Women's Premier League (WPL) has seen an 8% increase in its business enterprise value, rising from $150 million to $160 million. The league has continued to captivate audiences across television and digital platforms, emphasizing the significant investments in media rights by broadcasters and tech giants. The report underscores the evolving content consumption patterns in India, driven by increased internet penetration and affordable data plans, which are transforming the landscape of sports media rights.
