Cyclone Asna, the first cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea in August since 1976, has struck Gujarat and adjoining areas of Pakistan, triggering extreme weather conditions.
Formed from a deep depression off Kachchh, the cyclone has caused massive rain-induced flooding, claiming 26 lives and forcing the evacuation of over 18,000 people in Gujarat. Security forces have been using helicopters to rescue residents from flood-affected zones.
In Vadodara, the Vishwamitri river's water level has receded slightly but several low-lying areas remain inundated. The IMD has forecast that the cyclone will move westward, away from the Indian coast, in the coming days.
