In the wake of widespread protests over the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, a well-known theatre group in Malda has announced its decision to return a Rs 50,000 state grant. The group, Samabeta Prayas, led by Saradindu Chakraborty, made the announcement on Thursday.
The grant was originally intended to fund a two-day theatre festival in Malda. However, Chakraborty stated that the group could not accept financial support from a government perceived to be shielding the culprits and avoiding responsibility. He emphasized the group's commitment to holding the festival using their own resources.
The move has found backing from notable figures in the theatre community, including Kaushik Sen. Further amplifying the outcry, six Durga Puja committees have also rejected state financial awards, spotlighting the broader public dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the crime.
