French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Paralympic Games during a spectacular ceremony in Paris on Wednesday night.
Athletes were celebrated under tight security, but the atmosphere was joyous as the sun set on the Champs Elysees and the Place de la Concorde. In a unique twist, this was the first time the Paralympic curtain-raiser took place outside of a stadium.
The event featured performances from artists with disabilities, including a piano piece by Chilly Gonzales and a pop rendition of 'Je ne regrette rien' by French singer Christine and the Queens. Directed by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman, the ceremony ended with fireworks and an emotional cover of 'Born to be Alive'.
