Sreelekha Mitra, a Bengali actor, has accused Malayalam film director and Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman Ranjith of misbehaviour. Mitra claims Ranjith made inappropriate advances during a film discussion, which she rejected and subsequently withdrew from the project.
The accusations come in the wake of the Justice Hema Committee report, which highlighted harassment in the Malayalam cinema industry. Mitra's allegations have intensified calls for action. Political entities, including CPI, have demanded an investigation, and some have urged Ranjith to step down from his position during the probe.
Kerala Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cheriyan stated the government's commitment to protect women and assured that action would be taken if the allegations are proven. Health Minister Veena George and Higher Education Minister R Bindhu also supported facilitating Mitra's complaint process. The scandal has turned the spotlight on the need for stringent measures against misconduct in the film industry.
