A devastating knife attack at Solingen's 'Festival of Diversity' left three people dead and four seriously wounded on Friday in the western German city, police reported.
Authorities stated that the assailant is still on the run, with police sources identifying the weapon as a knife. The attack took place in the central Fronhof square.
Mayor Tim Kurzbach expressed profound sorrow over the incident in a Facebook post, highlighting the city's collective shock. 'We all wanted to celebrate our city's anniversary together, and now we have dead and wounded to lament,' he said.
The festival, which began on Friday to mark Solingen's 650th anniversary, was intended to run through Sunday, featuring attractions like live music and acrobatics across several central streets.
Solingen, home to around 160,000 residents, is located near the larger cities of Cologne and Duesseldorf.
