Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a protest in Kolkata on Friday in response to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Prominent actor-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly joined the demonstration, criticizing the police for allegedly trying to suppress evidence in the case.

"People are protesting across the country against the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital... This is a protest against the police force that tried to suppress the evidence. I welcome the Calcutta High Court's decision to task the CBI with investigating all instances of irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital," Ganguly asserted. The Calcutta High Court has instructed the CBI to investigate the irregularities, including the case involving former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj has mandated that the SIT transfer the investigation documents to the CBI by 10 a.m. on August 24. The CBI's progress report on the probe is expected by September 17. The court also stipulated that petitioner Akhtar Ali may request CBI security if needed.

The brutal crime has sparked widespread outrage and protests in cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Kolkata, with demands for justice and severe punishment for the perpetrators. The trainee doctor was discovered dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Subsequent unrest saw a mob vandalize the protest site and hospital campus on August 14, necessitating police intervention.

To maintain law and order, Kolkata Police have enacted Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, effective from August 18 to August 24, around the Medical College and Hospital campus.
