The Bidhannagar police commissionerate announced the cancellation of Sunday's highly anticipated Derby match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, citing security concerns. The decision stemmed from credible intelligence indicating possible attempts by certain groups to create disturbances at the Salt Lake Stadium during planned protests.
According to a senior officer, prohibitory orders under section 163 of BNSS were imposed from 4 pm to midnight on Sunday. This measure was aimed at preventing any disruption of peace amid the tense atmosphere sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor.
The police disclosed that five individuals were detained in connection with plans to protest at the stadium. Public safety was a paramount concern, given the 62,000 to 63,000-strong crowd expected to attend the match. Some supporters gathered outside the stadium, shouting slogans and seeking justice for the deceased doctor.
