The Culture Ministry announced on Wednesday that the 'Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan', initiated in 2022, has generated employment for thousands of women in self-help groups (SHGs), who are now leading flag production to satisfy the growing demand.

Union Culture Secretary Govind Mohan stated that approximately 25 crore flags are required annually, with the production shift from large vendors to SHGs transforming them into a thriving industry. These groups now predominantly produce and sell national flags.

Mohan highlighted that the programme, launched as part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, initially faced a significant challenge in meeting flag demand. The central government responded by procuring and distributing 7.5 crore flags from large vendors. Revising the Flag Code of India enabled SHGs to participate in flag production.

By 2023, SHGs significantly reduced the central government's flag supply demand, exemplified by Uttar Pradesh, which transitioned from purchasing 4.5 crore flags in 2022 to self-sufficiency in 2023. In 2024, central government demand dropped to 20 lakh flags. This transition underscores the campaign's role in economic empowerment for women and promoting 'Jan Bhagidari'.

The government urges citizens to hoist national flags at homes, workplaces, and institutions to foster patriotism and unity, continuing during this year's Independence Day celebrations.
