India and South Africa share a special relationship with significant potential at every level, according to the African nation's newly appointed High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal. He expressed hope that both countries can provide leadership on the global stage.

Sooklal, the first person of Indian origin to be appointed as South Africa's High Commissioner to India, made these remarks at an event held to celebrate his appointment. He noted the historic ties emphasized by late President Nelson Mandela, who visited India to thank its people for their role in leading the fight against apartheid.

Highlighting the potential for deeper bilateral ties, Sooklal spoke at the Swaminarayan Mandir in Mayfair, expressing confidence that the construction of the largest mandir in the southern hemisphere in Johannesburg will serve as a cultural bridge between Africa and Asia.

He recounted his Indian ancestral roots in South Africa and discussed the historic connection of indentured Indian laborers brought to work under harsh conditions. At the event, Sadhu Brahmavihari of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha mentioned former President APJ Abdul Kalam's admiration for South Africa and his hopes for Sooklal's impactful tenure.
