PM Modi Inaugurates New Indian High Commission in Brunei, Fortifies Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The chancery complex showcases traditional Indian motifs and lush tree plantations, with elegant claddings and durable Kota stones adding to its aesthetic appeal. The design combines classic and contemporary elements, creating a tranquil atmosphere and reflecting India's cultural heritage, according to the Prime Minister's Office.
During the inauguration, Modi lit a lamp and unveiled a plaque. He interacted with the Indian community members in attendance, lauding their role as a living bridge between India and Brunei and their contributions to bilateral ties. The first phase of Indian migration to Brunei began with the oil discovery in the 1920s.
Currently, there are approximately 14,000 Indians residing in Brunei, significantly contributing to the country's healthcare and education sectors. Modi, who arrived in Brunei on Tuesday, emphasized the importance of boosting commercial and cultural linkages. He was welcomed ceremonially by Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah at the airport. Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and looked forward to strengthening bilateral relations.
Upon his arrival, Modi was greeted warmly by the Indian diaspora, engaging in a heartfelt interaction with a girl who presented him with a painting of the Tricolour. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted Brunei's importance in India's 'Act East' Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. The visit marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei.
During his historic visit, Modi will engage in comprehensive bilateral discussions with Brunei's leadership and explore new collaboration areas. Following his Brunei visit, Modi will travel to Singapore on September 4 and 5.
