In a move to reflect Indian cultural values and reduce anglicisation, Rashtrapati Bhavan's iconic 'Durbar Hall' and 'Ashok Hall' were officially renamed to 'Ganatantra Mandap' and 'Ashok Mandap' on Thursday. This change symbolizes the Indian heritage and resonates with the nation's ethos.
Known for its grandeur, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the office and residence of the President of India, has been a symbol of the nation's rich cultural heritage. The renaming aligns with efforts to make the space more accessible and reflective of Indian cultural values. 'Durbar Hall' and 'Ashok Hall' hold significant historic and artistic relevance, being venues for important ceremonies and state functions.
The President's Secretariat issued a statement explaining the change. It asserted that the term 'Durbar' lost its relevance post-India becoming a Republic, while 'Ganatantra' (Republic) is deeply rooted in Indian society. 'Ashok Hall' became 'Ashok Mandap' to bring language uniformity and honor Emperor Ashok's values of unity and peaceful co-existence. The halls stand as a testament to India's rich historical and cultural tapestry.
