Anthony and Joe Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, could soon make their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to helm the next two 'Avengers' movies.

Sources revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the duo is in the early stages of negotiations to oversee the fifth and sixth installments of the blockbuster franchise. The Russos have previously directed four of Marvel Studios' most acclaimed films.

Notably, 'Deadpool & Wolverine' director Shawn Levy was also considered for the role, insiders say.

The Russo Brothers originally broke into mainstream cinema through TV comedies like 'Arrested Development' and 'Community', making their Marvel debut in 2014 with 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'. They later directed 'Captain America: Civil War' and the milestone films 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame'.

Over the last five years, they have shifted their focus to backing projects through their AGBO banner. This includes the Oscar-winning 'Everything Everywhere All at Once', and streaming hits like the 'Citadel' series and 'Extraction' movies with Amazon and Netflix.

For OTT platforms, they've directed 'Cherry' for Apple and 'The Gray Man' for Netflix, which is also funding their forthcoming movie, 'The Electric State'.

The fifth 'Avengers' movie, initially titled 'Avengers: The Kang Dynasty', was to feature Jonathan Majors as villain Kang. However, following Majors' conviction on assault and harassment charges, the studio parted ways with the actor. Destin Daniel Cretton also exited as director.

The film will now undergo a rebranding and is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. The sixth 'Avengers' movie, 'Secret Wars', is targeting a May 7, 2027 release.
