She lies to Gardar, telling him that she had sent their son to live with his brother. Sverkel offers his cart to Gardar, and he quietly leaves with Arnheid.

Gardar's wounds prove to be fatal, and he is overcome by delirium. In his final moments, he remembers the birth of his son, his life as a warrior and a slave, and the futility of a life of adventuring while abandoning his family. He dies in Arnheid's arms, with retainers arriving soon after to take them into custody.
