Authorities at Berhampur University in Odisha's Ganjam district have launched an investigation following complaints from first-year post-graduate students about being ragged by their seniors in the hostel, officials confirmed on Monday.

According to the complaint filed with the University Grants Commission (UGC), the students alleged that seniors entered their hostel around 11 pm on Saturday, subjected them to an extended 'introduction' session, and disrupted their sleep. However, the names of the senior students were not disclosed in the complaint, officials noted.

In response to the forwarded complaint, the varsity's anti-ragging committee and Board of Residence convened separate meetings to address the issue. "The anti-ragging committee has been tasked with investigating the allegations," stated Sukant Kumar Tripathy, acting vice chancellor of the university. Additionally, night patrolling on the campus will be intensified, and the anti-ragging squad has been instructed to conduct regular inspections of hostels and other susceptible areas.
