Protests erupted at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on Monday after a 25-year-old student, who was recently expelled by the university administration, committed suicide.

Gautam Kumar, a first-year MBA student, allegedly jumped from the seventh floor of his hostel building on Sunday. Originally from Vaishali in Bihar, Kumar had been studying at the IP University main campus in Dwarka Sector-16, Southwest Delhi.

Expelled for allegedly consuming alcohol and narcotic substances with five other students, Kumar's death has led to mass student protests. The university's administration has since discharged hostel warden Rakesh Kumar from his duties, according to IP University registrar Kamal Pathak.

Hundreds of students gathered outside the Vice-Chancellor's office, demanding justice for the deceased. They held posters and chanted slogans for accountability from university officials. Protesters also called for the resignation of Rakesh Kumar, citing a failure to properly investigate the incident.

As per the expulsion order, dated September 14, Kumar and the other students were removed from the hostel for substance abuse and were directed to vacate their rooms by September 15. Police were stationed outside the Vice-Chancellor's office as officials urged calm. Kumar had reportedly been distressed after the expulsion, which followed a birthday celebration in the hostel.
