Delhi Finance Minister Atishi announced on Monday that the GST Council has decided to exempt research grants from the GST net, marking a significant victory for the nation's educational sector. Atishi revealed this during a digital press conference, stating that six institutions, including IIT-Delhi and Punjab University, were previously issued show-cause notices over research grants.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been a vocal opponent of imposing GST on research grants, with Atishi and Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema expressing strong objections during the 54th GST Council meeting. 'This is a victory for the entire country,' she declared.

Atishi emphasized the party's continual opposition to what they termed 'tax terrorism,' explaining that GST should not be applied to research grants received by educational institutions. 'This decision not to impose GST on research grants is a significant step for the country's development,' she noted in a post on X.
