Nearly 120 students from Assam have returned from Bangladesh, which has been experiencing violent protests, a senior official said on Sunday.

Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), reported that the students entered India via Integrated Check Posts at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district and Dawki in Meghalaya.

"In the Northeast, students and others are entering through ICPs in Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Until Saturday night, 76 students entered from Dawki and another 41 from Sutarkandi," Tewari stated.

He added that students from Barak Valley mostly used Sutarkandi, while those from Brahmaputra Valley entered through Dawki. More students are expected to return, and the Assam government has deployed officials at Sutarkandi to assist them.

Students from Nepal, Bihar, and other states are also returning. Most Tripura students have arrived through the Akhaura post, Tewari noted.

The exact number of Assamese students in Bangladesh remains unknown, but the state government is tracking entries through Sutarkandi, ensuring safe returns, Tewari said.

Karimganj District Commissioner Mridul Yadav and his team have been visiting the Sutarkandi ICP, engaging with students to facilitate their return. Yadav affirmed that the district administration is prepared to assist incoming students, with officials stationed at the border around the clock until the situation stabilizes.
