The civil aviation ministry in India clarified on Monday that passengers' data using the Digi Yatra platform are not being shared with the tax authorities. This announcement follows the Income Tax Department's denial of reports suggesting data involvement in tax evasion crackdowns.
Digi Yatra operates on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), enabling a contactless experience throughout airport checkpoints. Passengers' data is encrypted, stored only on their devices, and shared momentarily with airports during travel, ensuring privacy.
The App follows the Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) model, ensuring that data is deleted when uninstalled and purged within 24 hours of flight departure. Managed by the Digi Yatra Foundation, it involves multiple shareholders including major Indian airports.
