The International Road Federation (IRF) has expressed support for the government's campaign targeting substandard helmets, urging a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on helmets from 18% to 0%. The IRF's call for action comes as part of efforts to enhance road safety amid India's high rate of road accident fatalities.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has stepped up its vigilance by instructing district collectors and magistrates to address the issue by launching a nationwide initiative. The focus is squarely on manufacturers and retailers who sell helmets that fail to meet safety standards. This measure is aimed at protecting two-wheeler riders who often purchase inferior quality helmets due to economic constraints.
IRF President Emeritus K K Kapila highlighted the urgency, noting the low usage of quality helmets among economically weaker sections. He emphasized that affordability is crucial, as mandated by the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, which requires all two-wheeler riders to wear helmets.
