Justice Sanjiv Khanna will assume the role of the 51st Chief Justice of India today. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10 am at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, with President Droupadi Murmu officiating the proceedings.
Justice Khanna succeeds Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, who concluded his tenure on Sunday. Justice Khanna's appointment as the Chief Justice comes following an official notification from the Government of India, which specifies his tenure will commence on November 11, 2024. Under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Indian Constitution, the Ministry of Law and Justice confirmed Khanna's appointment.
Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna's legal journey began in 1983 with the Delhi Bar Council. His expertise extends across multiple legal domains such as constitutional law, taxation, and environmental law. Prior to his 2019 elevation to the Supreme Court, he served as an advocate and later as a judge in the Delhi High Court.
In an emotional farewell, outgoing CJI DY Chandrachud reflected on his time in office, expressing deep fulfillment in serving the nation. He spoke of personal and professional growth while emphasizing the solemn duty of fulfilling legal responsibilities.
