In a worrying trend, the Delhi Metro has recorded 3,952 cases of thefts so far this year, marking an increase of at least 242 cases compared to the same period last year, according to Delhi Police statistics. By September 8 last year, the number of theft cases stood at 3,709.

These theft cases encompass a variety of incidents including pickpocketing, the loss of mobile phones, purses, other valuables belonging to passengers and metro staff, and even thefts of metro property. Official sources revealed that out of the 3,952 cases this year, 3,898 were registered via e-FIRs, with 548 of them resolved by September 8. In comparison, out of the 3,709 cases last year, 3,648 were reported through e-FIRs, and 1,471 were resolved within the same timeframe in 2023.

Additional data highlight 81 cases of motor vehicle thefts reported up to September 8 this year, with 56 resolved, compared to 72 cases last year, of which 61 were resolved by the same period. Additionally, 11 burglary cases were reported this year, up from three last year. The Delhi Police and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) are enhancing security protocols to ensure passenger safety.
