Jindal Stainless announced on Thursday that it has supplied high-strength tempered 301LN grade austenitic stainless steel for the Vande Bharat sleeper coaches, a prestigious government project.

The steel provides superior performance and durability, thanks to its corrosion resistance. This results in lower life-cycle costs and long-term reliability. Additionally, the material enhances passenger safety with its excellent crash and fire resistance properties, adhering to stringent railway safety standards.

The use of stainless steel will reduce each coach's weight by approximately two tonnes, leading to improved energy efficiency and a lower carbon footprint. This aligns with the sustainability goals of modern rail transport, signifying innovation and engineering excellence within the Indian Railways.

The first batch of coaches is expected to be dispatched from BEML's Bengaluru plant on September 20, 2024, with an official launch anticipated by December 2024. Jindal Stainless had a consolidated annual turnover of Rs 38,562 crore in FY24 and plans to increase its annual melting capacity to 4.2 million tonnes by 2026, operating 16 stainless steel facilities globally.
