Coal Production Soars to 384.08 Million Tonnes By August 2024

India's coal production has marked a notable increase, reaching 384.08 million tonnes (provisional) by August 2024 in FY 2024-25, up from 360.71 million tonnes during the same period in FY 2023-24. This uptick represents a growth of 6.48%, according to a statement from the Ministry of Coal.

The latest data from the ministry indicates that Coal India Limited (CIL) saw its production rise to 290.39 million tonnes between April and August 2024, up from 281.46 million tonnes in the same period last year, a growth of 3.17%. Meanwhile, coal production from captive and other entities also showed significant growth, climbing to 68.99 million tonnes in the same timeframe, a 30.56% increase from 52.84 million tonnes in the previous year.

Coal dispatches have also seen a considerable boost, with cumulative dispatches reaching 412.07 million tonnes up to August 2024, compared to 391.93 million tonnes during the same period in FY 2023-24, reflecting a 5.14% increase. CIL dispatched 309.98 million tonnes of coal from April to August 2024, a 1.51% improvement from the 305.37 million tonnes dispatched in the corresponding period last year. Additionally, captive and other entities recorded coal dispatches of 76.95 million tonnes, up 31.48% from 58.53 million tonnes in the same period last year.

The Ministry underscored that this growth is indicative of the sector's enhanced logistical capabilities and its commitment to maintaining a steady coal supply. On August 27, the Ministry reported cumulative coal production had reached 370.67 million tonnes by August 25, 2024, marking a robust 7.12% year-on-year growth compared to the 346.02 million tonnes produced during the same period in FY 2023-24.
