In a sweeping crackdown, approximately 1,700 unregistered e-rickshaws in Delhi were impounded and slated for scrapping between August 1 and August 28, as per the directives of Lt Governor VK Saxena. The move aims to curb the 'illegal proliferation' of these vehicles that have surged on Delhi's roads over the years.

Responding to Saxena's orders, the transport department launched the massive seizure operation, mobilizing 39 teams across the city. Officials report a sharp increase in the number of seized e-rickshaws, with statistics showing a dramatic rise in impounds from previous months.

The impounded e-rickshaws are either crushed or handed over to registered scrapping facilities after a reduced waiting period of seven days. This swift action aims to resolve congestion and safety issues caused by unregistered e-rickshaws, but it has left many drivers like Shyam Kumar worried about their livelihoods.
