Maharashtra Approves Rs 970 Crore Initiative to Convert MSRTC Buses to LNG

The Maharashtra government has approved a significant green transport initiative, converting 5,000 diesel-run MSRTC buses to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). According to a government resolution (GR), the project will cost Rs 970 crore.
The financial breakdown includes Rs 40 crore for 2024-25, Rs 200 crore for 2025-26, Rs 370 crore for 2026-27, and Rs 360 crore for 2027-28. The cost per bus for conversion and maintenance, including fuel sources, is estimated at Rs 19.40 lakh.
This move is expected to substantially reduce fuel costs. Additionally, MSRTC plans to induct 5,150 electric buses into its fleet, some of which are already in operation. MSRTC operates a fleet of about 15,000 buses, transporting approximately 60 lakh passengers daily.
