In a recent statement, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that the government's Quality Control Orders (QCOs) will protect Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from unfair competition and reduce the influx of sub-standard imports.
Goyal highlighted the government's commitment to providing MSMEs with sufficient time to comply with QCO requirements. He noted that these orders will benefit the sector by preventing the import of sub-par goods at unusual rates, thereby shielding MSMEs from unfair competition.
He also pointed out the crucial role MSMEs play within the broader ecosystem of larger industries, acting as both suppliers and customers. Goyal underscored the sector's significant contribution to tourism, infrastructure, and exports and mentioned that numerous SMEs have been listed on the BSE. The QCOs mandate that products like smart meters, nuts, bolts, and fasteners must bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark to be produced, sold, traded, imported, or stocked, ensuring product quality and consumer safety.
