The United States stands as the largest source of Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) in India for the fiscal year 2023-24, according to a recent report by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The report noted a slight increase in the total number of FPIs, which reached 11,219 by March 31, 2024, up from 11,081 the previous year. Of these, 3,457 were from the United States.

SEBI's analysis highlighted the considerable concentration of FPIs from specific countries. The U.S. led with 3,457 registered FPIs, trailed by Luxembourg with 1,393 and Canada with 804. The report delved into the country-wise distribution and their respective Assets Under Custody (AUC), which indicates the total value of assets managed and held by these FPIs.

By the end of March 31, 2024, the AUC of FPIs surged by 42.8 percent, reaching Rs 69.5 lakh crore from Rs 48.7 lakh crore at the close of the previous fiscal year. Notably, equity assets constituted 92.2 percent of this total AUC. The U.S. contributed 39.2 percent to the equity AUC, followed by Singapore at 9.8 percent and Luxembourg at 7.1 percent. This significant growth in AUC underscores the rising confidence of foreign investors in India's financial markets. The SEBI report also noted that 2023-24 witnessed the highest FPI inflows since 1992-93, underscoring India's growing appeal amid its persistent economic resilience and fiscal stability.
