New Delhi [India], July 23 (ANI) — Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to support the comprehensive development of Vishnupad Temple in Gaya and Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, modeling them on the successful Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor. The goal is to transform these sites into world-class pilgrim and tourist destinations.

Addressing Parliament during the Union Budget presentation, Sitharaman emphasized the spiritual significance of both temples and the broader economic benefits of enhancing India's appeal as a global tourist destination. The announcement follows the NDA government's rejection of Janata Dal United's demand for special status for Bihar. Sitharaman cited tourism's role in creating jobs, stimulating investments, and unlocking economic opportunities across sectors.

The Mahabodhi Temple Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the earliest Buddhist temples still standing and marks the location of Lord Buddha's enlightenment. Meanwhile, the Vishnupad Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, has historical roots dating back to 1787.

Sitharaman also unveiled plans for the comprehensive development of Rajgir and Nalanda in Bihar, significant religious sites for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Rajgir's Saptharishi hot springs and ancient Jain temples will be focal points, while Nalanda's revival includes enhancing its tourist appeal and restoring Nalanda University.

The Finance Minister extended the tourism development plan to Odisha, leveraging its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. The initiative aims to promote local entrepreneurship and position India as a premier tourist destination.
