China's Post-Pandemic Tourism Boost: Visa-Free Travel Surge

Guilherme Carvalho made his first visit to China this month, compelled by the country's new post-pandemic policy allowing visa-free entry for some tourists.

Previously, all foreign visitors had to endure the cumbersome process of applying for a Chinese visa. Now, visitors from more than a dozen countries can fly in and stay for up to 15 days. 'I didn't expect to feel so safe,' said Carvalho, who visited Shanghai. 'Everyone is so kind.'

Carvalho is one of many as authorities focus on boosting foreign tourism to revive the economy and stimulate sluggish consumer spending. Thousands have flocked to China, encouraged by the visa changes and easier access to digital payment services. As of June 24, bookings from several countries under the new visa policy surged 150% year-on-year, according to data from China's largest online travel agency Trip.com.
