A stampede-like situation unfolded when approximately 800 candidates arrived for walk-in interviews conducted by a company in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, targeting only 40 job positions, officials confirmed.
Thursday saw viral videos capturing the extensive queue of job aspirants, characterized by shoving and pushing, as they attempted to enter the hotel's interview hall. The metal railing of the entry ramp ultimately collapsed, causing numerous candidates to fall, although none reported injuries.
The event, occurring on Tuesday, sparked a political exchange between the opposition Congress and the ruling BJP. The Congress criticized the 'Gujarat model' of development touted by the BJP, while the BJP countered, alleging the opposition was trying to malign the state's reputation.
Superintendent of Police Mayur Chavda clarified, "The company organized interviews for about 40 vacancies across five roles and anticipated around 150 candidates; however, 800 appeared, forcing officials to close the hall doors to manage the crowd."
Despite the chaotic scene, no injuries were recorded, and no complaints were filed, Chavda added.
The opposition Congress, referencing the viral video on social media platform X, accused the ruling party of fostering unemployment through its development model. The BJP refuted this, arguing the attendees were likely already employed, thus debunking claims of widespread joblessness.
The company sought candidates for positions such as shift in-charge, plant operator, supervisor-CDS, fitter-mechanical, and executive-ETP at its new facility in Jhagadia industrial area.
