Meta Clamps Down on Fake Moldovan Online Campaign Ahead of Election

Meta Platforms Inc. announced on Friday the removal of a network of misleading group accounts targeting Russian-speaking audiences in Moldova. This action precedes the country's October 20 election and aligns with the company's policy against fake account operations.

Located between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova has a Romanian-speaking majority and a significant Russian-speaking minority. As the country prepares for its election, President Maia Sandu, known for her pro-European stance, is seeking another term amid a national referendum on European Union membership.

The fake accounts were reportedly critical of President Sandu and Moldova's pro-EU stance, supporting pro-Russia parties. Meta revealed that the network created fictitious, Russian-language news outlets pretending to be independent across various platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. The Moldovan government has condemned Russia for meddling in its affairs, while Russia claims the government incites Russophobia.
