Libya's Internal Security Agency announced on Saturday that it successfully intercepted a smuggling operation at Misrata international airport, involving 100 kg (220 lb) of gold and 1.5 million euros. The smugglers were apprehended during a routine security check of an international flight.

The agency revealed on its verified Facebook page that the contraband was hidden in several suitcases, with the gold bars spread across three and the money in one. Pictures of the confiscated items were also shared online.

Misrata, a port city located approximately 200 km (125 miles) east of Tripoli, has seen previous smuggling incidents. In May, the attorney general in Tripoli ordered the arrest of customs officials at Misrata international airport for attempting to smuggle nearly 26,000 kg of gold. Libya has been in turmoil since a 2011 uprising, leading to fragmentation between eastern and western factions.
