A Pakistani national residing in Canada was arrested after being charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to ISIS, the US Department of Justice announced. The 20-year-old suspect, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, allegedly planned a terrorist attack in New York City, intending 'to slaughter as many Jewish people as possible' in the name of ISIS, stated Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.

'The defendant was allegedly determined to kill Jewish people in the United States, nearly one year after Hamas' attack on Israel. This investigation was led by the FBI, whose exemplary work, along with that of their partners, thwarted Khan's plan,' said FBI Director Christopher Wray. 'The FBI remains committed to combating terrorism and will continue to work closely with our partners to hold accountable those who seek to commit violence under the guise of extremist ideologies,' Wray added.

According to the complaint, Khan attempted to travel from Canada to New York City, intending to execute a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn in support of ISIS. Around November 2023, Khan began posting ISIS propaganda online and communicating via encrypted messaging apps with undercover law enforcement officers. He instructed them to acquire assault rifles, ammunition, and other materials for the attack, while specifying locations and dates. Khan emphasized October 7 and October 11 as optimal dates for the attacks due to their significance.

Khan faces one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge, per US Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
