Samsung Plant Faces Second Day of Strikes in India
Operations at Samsung Electronics' plant in India were disrupted for a second day due to hundreds of employees striking for higher wages. The strike, coming ahead of the festive season, affects one of Samsung's key growth markets. Employees demand better wages, working conditions, and union recognition.
The Samsung Electronics manufacturing plant in southern India experienced a second consecutive day of disruption on Tuesday, as hundreds of employees continued their strike demanding higher wages. The unrest, one of the rare labor issues for the South Korean firm, comes as the festive season approaches, a peak time for electronics sales.
The facility, which is one of two in India, plays a crucial role in Samsung's operations, contributing significantly to the company's annual $12 billion revenue in the region. Striking employees set up tents outside the Sriperumbudur plant, near Chennai, plastering posters that read 'Indefinite Strike.'
Union leader E. Muthukumar confirmed the continuing strike, which affected about half of the plant's daily production. Workers seek better wages, improved working conditions, and formal recognition for their union. Requests for comments from Samsung India went unanswered, although the company had previously stated its commitment to addressing workers' grievances while adhering to all regulations.
