The Indian government on Monday approved a Rs 3,307-crore semiconductor unit by Kaynes Semicon in Sanand, Gujarat, with a capacity to produce 6.3 million chips daily.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision post the Union Cabinet meeting, emphasizing the creation of a robust semiconductor ecosystem under the India Semiconductor Mission. He highlighted the sector's critical role in India's industrial growth and production strategy.

The plant will span 46 acres in Sanand and cater to various sectors including industrial, automotive, and telecommunications. Construction is set to commence soon, with significant portions of the output already pre-booked by Kaynes Industries. Additionally, Tata Electronics' complex semiconductor fab in Dholera, in partnership with Taiwan's PSMC, is progressing well with land already acquired and designs finalized. India's semiconductor mission also includes major investments from companies like Micron, set to yield its first 'Made in India' chip by next year.
